We hope your Christmases were bright! This is still a writing in progress, so time has kept on ticking.
Discovering new neighborhood spots has become the fad for me and Dwayne. While riding in a taxi a few weeks ago, we found ourselves in unfamiliar territory...AGAIN...but realized quickly that it was not far from our place. I spotted yet another DVD store and we were itching to check it out. Off we go...with Miles in his stroller...headed to locate this 'larger than the others' outfit. Miles was hanging out with us for the afternoon. We were also joined by one of our neighbors...Johnny...who acted as our guide. He and his parents have lived in our building for the past eight years, he just graduated from Shanghai University, and is just the cutest, politest young man we have met since our arrival...trust us. He was intrigued to go with us since he could not remember seeing this infamous DVD store and we were glad to have him tag along. The walk was long...but interesting. Miles enjoyed being pushed, as opposed to walking, and being able to chat with himself, the birds, or the people around him wanting to get a look at this gorgeous baby.
We finally get there and it was awesome! We were all pleased at the pickings and left with huge smiles. Miles was able to get his favorite..."Tom and Jerry"...Dwayne and I are "Law and Order" fans...guess what?...found the first couple of seasons. We didn't think twice about taking a taxi home...we had some TV watching to do!
The rest of the week was pretty laid back. The fellas only worked Monday thru Wednesday since Brown Sugar was hosting a New Orleans Jazz Festival featuring members of the Preservation Hall from Thursday thru Saturday. The club's grand opening was nearing, so they were glad to have a few days off. Dwayne and I enjoyed watching movies and entertaining. We had the Temples over for dinner on Saturday night. We were hoping to make it out to see the jazz preservation hall band...didn't happen. We went to the Temples' for dinner on Sunday night and out on the town afterwards. Oh boy!
We started at the House of Blues and Jazz. They have open jam sessions on Sundays...right up Dwayne's and Brannen's alleys. Another part of Shanghai was discovered and it was a night to remember. The house band was speechless once Dwayne got on stage and took the bass in hand. THEN...he found his way to the drum kit!! The whole place was rockin'! Brannen and Dwayne have magic when they're on stage together. Sam, the band leader, was in awe. Not to mention the club manager and other musicians and vocalists who had dropped by. We met sooo many wonderful people that evening. It was really comforting to meet more Black folk...fa' real. We all exchanged business cards and promised to support each other's shows when we could. Sarah had friends from Spain in town on business. They were up for some REAL partying...so...we close down this place and head to another! Judy's...yep...Judy's. Somewhere in this big city are places where you can really get your groove on...ANY WAY YOU WANT TO!! Need I say more? House music was blasting, we were greeted at the door by hotties waiting to get us seated, and before we could get our coats off, the big bottle of whiskey, glasses, ice and cokes were already in place. Aw hell...let's have some FUN!!! It wasn't long before the poles that stood around the place...didn't notice them at first...were being hugged by thinly clad girls who worked them like there would be no tomorrow. I couldn't get the words out fast enough telling Dwayne what was happening around him! He just had this shit-eatin' grin on his face as if he could really see. LOL. There were seven of us and we were never ignored. Food appeared from the little grill right outside...and it was delicious. You know we've been apprehensive about eating the food off the street, but hey...we were gonna have to try it at some point. This was a good time. A tray of shot glasses filled with some sort of sweet liquor topped with whipped cream arrived. We were supposed to use our mouths to grip the glasses and chug them down. Now THIS was waaay too much for the county girl. Dwayne did his thang and so did the rest. Somebody needed to have their scruples when we left!! LOL. What an evening AND morning. Daylight was not too far behind when we left. Guess it didn't take long for us to get comfy in China, huh?

China Cold
I can't believe we've already been here four weeks! We researched the weather before leaving the states, so the chilly days and down right cold nights were not a surprise. I took up the habit of looking out the windows in the mornings to see what people were wearing...jackets, hats and gloves...or just jackets. Of course I soon realized, it was no help to me...I was cold while inside and outside! I needed to be bundled at all times. Wearing two pairs of socks around the house became common. Dwayne just grinned at me when I fussed about the cold. We have heating units in each room as opposed to central heat. The harwood floors creak constantly because of the chill. Is this on the agenda of 'growing old'? LOL
Bearing all this in mind, I wake up on Tuesday, of our fourth week, with a scratchy throat. OH NO!! THIS CAN'T BE!! Yep...the beginnings of a bad cold. We brought our handy Mucinex along and I immediately took a dose. That stuff has always done the trick. Not this time. I found myself sneezing, coughing, blowing and ultimately crying. How could this happen? I needed to be up and at 'em! I couldn't be lying in that hard thing called a bed for more hours than necessary. I've got to be on top of my game!!
Dwayne was the cutest throughout this entire ordeal. He apologized for not being able to go down to the pharmacy on the corner to get more meds by himself. We walked together on the next day and found a few things that were familiar...and eventually helpful. He made sure that I ate...even tho' he didn't cook...and opted to sleep on the sofa so that I could rest easier. Wasn't that something?
The China cold lasted for another four days. Dwayne continued to go out to work. I wasn't able to see Sarah and Miles for those days...didn't wanna contaminate anybody. We had been spending evenings together while the guys did their thing, so I had some quiet but achy time alone.
That Saturday was a very sunny but still chilly day and I was determined to get myself up and out of the house. I took a stroll with Dwayne to Brown Sugar...a rehearsal was scheduled. It would be the first time for me to actually see the club. It was everything I imagined...and more. When these folk set their minds on having the best...consider it done! We had lunch together and I finally met Sean, the keyboard player and Meachie, the male vocalist. I had met Indeya, the female vocalist, the week before. She provided cough drops during my five-day illness...she's a doll. They were all head over heels with Dwayne and his talents. The conversation went on and on. That made me feel better...all the way around.
After listening to a few tunes, my impression grew huge. The Brown Sugar All Stars were in the house and ready to bring the noise. There were people working already...and this was mid-afternoon. They applauded after every song. I was easily convinced that Dwayne's and Brannen's purposes were sealed. Grand opening was set for next week. Shanghai...get ready...get ready...get ready!
I felt so much better, that I decided to do a little more walking. I left the club and headed to a supermarket we had yet to explore...E-Mart. It was about five long blocks from Xintaindi, but only three from our apartment. The trip home would be a cinch! I dared to venture down another street full of everyday people selling everything known to man. I had to literally walk down the middle of the street because the sidewalks were overtaken by eager vendors. I wished I had the strength to stop and look around, but it WAS my first day out since Monday. I needed to look ahead and stay focused.
E-Mart was quite interesting. Much like Century Mart, it had multiple floors of goods with 99% of them labeled in a Chinese language of some sort. I found my way to the 'imported' goods and was happy to fill my cart with familiar items. While in the meat market, I came across packages of meats that were just scary!! I had to look at the pictures above the cases to know what animal these meats were SUPPOSED to come from, okay? Chicken...yay! Finally. Well...maybe not. Well...maybe...but the head and feet are still attached. Oh my! Can a sistah get some chicken WINGS? That'll be just fine. Whew!!
I pray--Lord, please help me get through this store with food that will digest properly and give us nutrients. Amen.
I left with four bags in hand and was wrapped up as if there was six feet of snow awaiting me. It's now around 6 pm or so and those same people are still selling their goods, however, I am able to stroll a few sidewalks this time. I promise myself that I'll be back down this same street when I'm feeling a little better...and with a little patience. Getting home was a relief. My outing was the best cure for my China cold.

There's More!
Post-Thanksgiving called for a few more meetings. Gearing up for the main reason we are on this trip is finally taking place. With formalities in order, and expectations high, it's time to see Brown Sugar for what it is.
The fearsome four plus one dared another outing. This time we check out what's called 'Raffles City'. HUGE MALL. I believe there are seven floors in this one. Brannen and Sarah had scoped the place earlier, and were impressed with the food court, no less. So we made that our sole purpose of visiting there...yea right. Shops offering coats, boots, hats, scarves, perfume, cologne and music were strategically aligned. Each floor offered specifics...for the specific. No, we DID NOT try to make our way through this entire massive structure...we made sure we ate...okay? LOL.
The Temples were right. The food was delicious. They suggested a place that offered curry dishes. There was silence throughout our lunch...even from Miles. Again, we were overwhelmed by the choices of eateries. Again, people were begging us to come and try something...even if it did look spooky! We found our way to a donut cafe...yes...every kind of donut you could think of was available. No joke! We couldn't try them all, but a sweet-toothed individual could easily make his or her home in there! Unbelievable I tell ya!
After lunch, we wandered a few floors, and Sarah and I tried on hats and jewelry. Our wish list became enormous within minutes of passing two stores. How does one make a sound decision when you have this kind of menagerie at your fingertips? It was a good time anyway. Window shopping and people watching...us, that is. We are certainly eye-catchers in this city. No matter where we go. People pointing and giggling. Who cares? We get a kick out of it.
Christmas season is taking over as well. You know how it is in the states. Halloween is barely over and the stores are already decorating for Christmas. These folk believe in 'showing off', let me tell it. It was dark as we prepared to leave and just outside was the biggest 'toyland' structure we had ever seen. I took a few minutes to describe to Dwayne what all the commotion was about. He could hear the oohs and aahs. He could hear the squeals from the little ones as well. Miles immediately found a spot of pleasure. There was music, bubbles and snowflakes coming from it. Digital and video cameras were in hand. WOW!!
We called it an evening...one for the memory book for sure. The guys had a full next day planned. It was becoming clearer...Shanghai had a lot to offer...and there's more!

Thanksgiving
A new week has started. The vocalists have finally arrived and the WHOLE band can now do what they came to do!
We are still waiting on the internet connection to be installed in our apartment. Rehearsals are scheduled during the evenings, so Dwayne and I are anxious to explore more of our neighborhood. Walking is the way around here. Taking the taxi is essential. Bicyclists and scooter riders take over the sidewalks and expect you to get out of the way! Thinking about all of this, we get up early to start our day. We are in search of more DVDs. We were told about another shop and couldn't wait to get there. Crossing the streets around here is another danger. Remember, the people riding their bikes and scooters TAKE the right-of-way. No questions. We have to dodge them AND the cars that are making turns illegally! We thought we were prepared, but we soon realize...we'll NEVER be!!
The people here work hard...there are businesses in every nook and corner possible. There's a guy on the next block who repairs bicycles...on that corner! No individual space...the sidewalk is his repair shop. People cook and have tiny lil' spaces for folk to eat. They even set up tables on the sidewalk outside the business. We have to move from the sidewalks to the streets when we come across these. No problem. We find the DVD shop and come out happy campers. Yay!
It's cold!! My feet get it the most. Dwayne has his work cut out for him to rub my feet and get them warm. He doesn't complain...praise God! Not a day has gone by where we could step outside without a jacket or coat. I have my scarves and keep my gloves in my purse...and I'm thankful.
The guys are off from rehearsal on Thanksgiving Day. The Chinese do not celebrate the way we do in America. It's just another day. Just when we thought our water problems were solved, the shower decides to drain slowly and we now have a Shanghai pool. That little piece of comedy was scheduled to be solved on this day...our day of thanks. We tried to think of how we would spend it, but found no solutions. Dwayne and I slept in and contemplated over our choices for dinner. The large hotels here offer Thanksgiving buffets at a huge RMB rate AND you would have to make reservations...three weeks before! Oops! We missed that one, huh? We were satisfied with calling out for a meal. The only place thus far would be McDonalds. Oh well. The people show up to repair the shower and we are satisfied and thankful.
Rescued by Brannen and company, we were blessed with some of the best burgers in town for our Thanksgiving supper in Shanghai. They surprised us with cheeseburgers and dessert from one of the restaurants in Xintaindi. Can you imagine? We ALL believe in the traditional Thanksgiving fare with the works, but we are not at home...we are far, far away. We stuffed ourselves into a food coma...we gave thanks...and all was well.
Back to business on Friday for the guys. Saturday was set-up day at the club. They had a chance to go check out all the instruments and extras, get them in proper order and prepare to rock that joint! We were all ready for this thing to come together. We were very thankful for the blessings we had received...God is good...all the time.

Life Is Such
On Saturday, we were invited by our guides to visit a computer mart. Country girl is back. I was speechless. This place had four or five floors of nothing but computers, mp3s, cameras and any other digital, technical gizmo ever made. There were booths for all of these things. There were groups of people in these booths, reaching out to you, begging you to buy their product. They were fast talkers, knew their products and were quite convincing. I thought, are we gonna be overwhelmed like this for the rest of our stay here? It was tooo much for the country girl. Dwayne and I left there empty-handed and did not feel bad about it. We were in search of a good camera and laptop, but it was more than we could handle. We knew we would work something out.
That wasn't enough. We walked across the street to Shanghai Times Square. Stores galore. Coach. Gucci. You know! We were going to a specific place for groceries where foreigners shop. City Shop is the name. Jackpot! This is where Americans, Europeans, Italians, Germans and anybody else who is not a local, come to shop. When we spotted Cheetos and mustard, it was a joyous moment. They have a deli and a meat market with wings that look like those of a chicken and not some other feathered creature. Their selections are not huge, but it IS the place to go and get your 'there's no place like home' feeling. Now THIS made our day, for sure! No camera or laptop this go round, but paper towels? Lawry's Garlic Salt and Lemon Pepper? We were too tickled.
After that moment to remember, we came home and I got in that kitchen. We had a few folk over...ya'll know we love to entertain...and we had a good time. Sarah made a Spanish dish that was to live for. The night flew by fast. Our company left and Miles decided he was full and ready for bed. Dwayne and Brannen decided the same, and encouraged me and Sarah to go out on the town for a while. We all had been invited to a party earlier by one of our guests, but didn't make any promises. It was raining for the first time since our arrival, but we quickly agreed and off we went. Dark, the company's entertainment director, met us at Bar Rouge. Were we in for a party? Yes, we were. It was on the top floor of the building and packed with party goers. The music was kicking and we were escorted to a VIP area. We were met with hugs and kisses. Who are these people? Do you know us? Naw, but who gives a damn...let's keep this party jumping! We stayed for a few hours, shook what our mamas gave us, Sarah had cocktails and I had champagne. We made it home safely to our men...all snoring and sound asleep. Such is life...

Getting Down To Business
After all the excitement over the past few days, being in a different country is becoming more comfortable. Dwayne and I have visited the little supermarket in our neighborhood enough to where they recognize us. Well...how hard is it to spot two black people among the millions of Chinese? LOL...we spotted a good red wine for a good price...and knew this was the ticket! They caught on fast to our purchases and made sure that we were helped right away. They keep our wine in stock...even go to the back to make sure that they have more if we want extra. These people are funny...I tell ya!
Another meeting was planned and set in Xintaindi. Rehearsals would start tomorrow (Tuesday) for Dwayne and Brannen. Sarah and Miles tagged along and while the fellas met, we explored the mall. The same thing we walked in with...we walked out with...NOTHING! We were determined, while on this trip, to find more suitable deals for what we carried in our purses! Lord have mercy! Do these people really have this much money to spend??
The four of us and Miles had spotted a pizza place earlier and opted to try it out. Okay. Fancy. Pizza Marzano. Linen napkins and bathrooms that required instructions on how to flush the toilet. At least I felt I needed them. Dwayne and I had wine and Sarah and Brannen had cocktails while we waited. Oh boy! Miles couldn't resist the ice cream shop next door, so that was his appetizer. The menu was extensive AND expensive. Remember, the U.S. dollar don't mean a thing over here. We carry RMB. So when you're looking over these menus and see that a pizza is 108 RMB you think...what? Are they outside their minds? But then, when you figure that 100 RMB is a little less than $20 in America, you settle down...a bit. $20 for one pizza? Where is Papa Johns'? Don't they have pizza buffets? It turns out, this fancy pizza joint was da bomb! We promised to go back...when we had a lil' extra RMB.
The next day, I decided to cook brunch for Brannen, Sarah, Miles and Dwayne before rehearsal. I managed to smuggle tortillas in my luggage...stop laughing. Anywayz...I made the fixings for some breakfast tacos. Our first home cooked meal. No...I left the salsa in America. So they were still good. Stop laughing.
The rest of that week was centered around Dwayne going to rehearsals and my not becoming bored. Me? To be able to sit home and watch movies wasn't a bad deal. There were a few glitches. No internet access and no working phones. Boredom tried its best to overcome me. I wasn't having it. The company soon provided local cell phones and service, so that glitch was a done deal. Could I now have means to get this blog started, please?
In the mean time, our water situation was taken care of. Hot water and good pressure was an answered prayer. The plumbing system over here sucks. They all admit to it. Having two skillets and one pot was another test. Your RMB went fast on eating out, so the alternative was a must! To see me working on a full course meal with limited cooking necessities and two burners, was hilarious. You know I made it work. Dwayne got his fried chicken, mashed potatoes and fresh green beans as requested. I even tried my hand at a curry chicken soup. Yummy!
We visited Brannen, Sarah and Miles. Their place is nice as well. They live on the top floor of their building...34. Yes! And there are 20 floors in our building. People gotta live somewhere around here...I've already told you.
The rehearsal space where the guys go is not too far away. They have to take a taxi there and back, but find out that between 5pm and 7pm everyday, in this big city, getting a taxi is literally impossible. What time is rehearsal over? 6 pm. Okay. They make it through the rest of the week, but not without a few curse words.

Out and About
It's a brand new day...praise God. Our bodies are now speaking the language. There are aches in places we didn't know existed. It's alright.
Valent arrives to take us shopping. We need pots, pans, dishes...things for the house. We are meeting Brannen, Sarah and Miles. Another taxi ride...oh Lord! We made our way to Century Mart. Whoa! Do we buy from outside or inside? Every kind of vendor in the world was posted outside and wanted our attention. What shall we do? We head inside and there's more! Rows of booths, as opposed to individual set-ups outside, lined the walls. Shopping carts awaited us so we knew there was much more to behold. Yep! A three-story shopping center. House goods, groceries, and more. Is this the Shanghai Wal-Mart? LOL...
We shop til we drop. I HAD to have my coffee pot. Four different women tried their damnest to convince me of the better brand and buy. Oh...I HAD to have my iron as well. Same show. Different item. Oh boy! Where ARE we? All of our shopping carts were full and we were overwhelmed. Miles didn't hesitate to inform us of his plight. This was a bit much...and we agreed. Let's get outta here for God's sake!!
We return home to find that our place had been freshened up, per se. I noticed our clothes hanging OUTSIDE our living room window and knew we were REALLY in China. EVERYBODY had clothes hanging...panties included. WOW! So this is how they do it. No dryers. Just hang your stuff out to be dried by the natural air, why don't cha! AND...we have a maid to do it! Dwayne pleaded with me to allow this person to come in and do her job. Ya'll know how I am...I have to have things a certain way, right? Oh well...I'd try. I promised him.
We made plans for dinner. Of course, we needed a nap before making another move. We take our first walk...about 20 minutes...to Xintiandi (shin-tan-dee) Plaza. That's the place where the club is located. It's an upscale tourist attraction with a mall and restaurants. From Hugo Boss to Starbucks...this is ONE of the many places where foreigners gather. We find ourselves at a quaint little place where the menu offered variety...yay! The food wasn't grand...but it worked. The atmosphere was much more captivating and the passers-by were of all walks of life. Miles was still capturing the hearts of females. We took a stroll to the club, which was undergoing the finishing touches. From what we observed, Brown Sugar would be happening!! The evening proved to be successful.
We had gotten a DVD player while shopping and could not return home without movies. Of course, we find a little shop not five minutes from our place, as we walked back home, that has 'black market' DVDs. What could we say? We find several goodies...some old and some new...but none the less cheap...we were set.
Our next day took us back to Xintiandi. Dwayne had a meeting to attend and we chose to have a lunch date beforehand. This time we stopped by a German cafe. Nice. The fare was really good. Sitting outside, as we had done last night, was the prime choice. Checking out the scenery was an adventure in itself. The meeting was held at The Coffee Bean and Tea House which was right across from where we were. Here's a custom these folk take seriously...lattes and tea...morning, noon and night. There was hardly a place to sit...inside or out. It's compatible to Starbucks, but we were told that they do MUCH better business. No need for explanation...it was obvious. The 'meeting' turned out to be an interview with a local magazine. Here we met the other band members and more Brown Sugar staff. Dwayne spoke well. You'd be proud of him...as I was. After all was said and done, we were hungry again! We make plans for another dinner together later with our guides.
We all meet at a wonderful Chinese restaurant and are greeted with smiles. Our guides are giving instructions in the language that we are still trying to grasp and our table has at least four different people scurrying to meet our needs. Food galore. Things are brought to the table that look and smell delicious...but we haven't a clue what they are. Hell, we dig in anyway. Spicy, sizzling, crispy...you name it. Dwayne...Mr. Meat and Potatoes Man...tried tofu for the first time in his life! He was tickled and so were we. The eel was to live for! These folks also take dining seriously. Food magically appeared. We must have had a ten course meal. This was the best Chinese food we had ever tasted. Austin, Texas...take a seat. THIS is the real deal. We were treated like royalty and it felt great! After dessert and hot tea, we called it a day...and THAT...it was.
Our first Saturday was laid back. We needed to be still and take this all in. We stayed in our pajamas and enjoyed our movies. We found out that McDonald's was open 24-hours AND delivered. We took advantage of that...and to our surprise, it was really good. We decided that we would venture out alone on Sunday for groceries. The trip to Century Mart on Thursday was totally for the house. We needed to have a few staples...and Dwayne was craving my cooking...go figure. LOL...
Again, shopping was the adventure of the month. How do you shop for food in a place where everything is written in Chinese and not a soul speaks English? This was a true test. Dwayne and I managed to keep our composure and learned that sign language was a key component. If we could describe with our hands what we were looking for, it wasn't too bad. Of course, everyone was eager to help and being with a blind man was a plus. We got EXTRA help. LOL...
We finished our shopping without incident...hailed our own taxi...and made it back home safely. Whew! We figured...the best was yet to come.

Home Sweet Home?????
Our first night in Shanghai proved to be fulfilling. Plans were already made for our next day. We prepare accordingly and convince ourselves that a good night's sleep would do us a world of good.
Our apartment is cozy. We try the TV out for size and realize that what we read about in the states was true...no English channels. Oh well. We are ready to stretch our legs anyhow. It's been a very, very, very long two days...when you factor in the time change. 14 hours to be exact.
Our bed was calling our names...and we answered. Well alrighty then. What in the hell is this THING that looks like a bed...is made up like a bed...but is NOT a bed? Oh my! There's no mattress!! What? How are we supposed to get a good night's sleep on this hard ass thing? It's the box spring and the thinnest padding in life! How do they expect us to relax our minds when our backs are in pain? Oh no...they have GOT to be kidding!! Okay. Dwayne and I agree...when in China...do as Chinese!
Dwayne finds his spot much quicker than I do. The snores were getting louder. I decide to explore our new abode. Our kitchen is really cute! Everything is so small though. Humm. Surprised? NOT. The kitchen sink is definitely made for one who stands under five feet. And why are there only two burners on the stove? Where is the oven? The frig and freezer are what you would call the 'compact model'. Lots of cabinet space. I can make it work. No problem. The other two bedrooms are just as cute. Little beds, night stands and desks. Odd closets and book shelves. The curtains are great! Oh...that little square box in the hallway between the kitchen and bathroom is the washing machine. Where's the dryer? And the shower? At least four people could get in there at one time. Wow! I'm really dragging now...why not try it out? That should surely be the answer to achieving my much needed rest. Okay...the water's not so hot. I need hot water folks. I'm trying to relax my body and mind. Hello! Okay...the water pressure is not cooperating. Hello! Anybody. Damn. I can't fight it any longer. I have got to lay it down. It is...what it is...

China...what about it?
We are pleased as punch about our apartment. Good. Everything about this trip has been exciting thus far, and wondering what was next?...didn't scare us at all. Bring it on!
We have to hail our first taxi. We are on our way to dinner and drinks. There are people everywhere! It's almost 9 p.m. I've gotta remember where I am. Shanghai, China. 20 million people. Crazy taxi drivers. Now, when I tell you, our lives were in the hands of a none caring, no driving ass China man! The streets are full of other taxi drivers just like him, people are riding bicycles and scooters, pushing carts and walking, and let's not forget the REGULAR drivers. Lord today!! The streets are narrow and guess what? They don't give a damn. They will run your ass over, okay? They don't pay attention to the stop lights. They don't pay attention to anything or anybody! Your life is in danger, I tell ya!
We safely make it to our destination...Bar Hulu. Nice. Really nice. From the minute the doors were opened for us, we were the royal guests. These people know how to do it up! We arrive upstairs to observe luxury. Tables adorned with linen napkins, flatware that could be used as mirrors and spotless wine glasses that await the elite. We are shown the deck where that same skyline that I marveled on the way in from the airport seemed much closer now. It was maaavelous! The air was a lil' chilly, so we chose to dine inside...this time. We all knew that this place would be revisited as soon as time permitted.
The waitstaff was eager. We ARE foreigners no doubt. Their pleasure was ours for the taking. A bottle of red wine arrived and the menu was our heart's desires. WOW! From the appetizer...seafood soup...to the entrees...steak, lamb, chicken, halibut with trimmings...to the dessert...the darkest chocolate mound of sweet something surrounded by ice cream and a platter of skillfully sliced fruits...AND another bottle of wine...we were knocking on heaven's door!
Let's not forget about our 18 month old...Mr. Miles was da man! His new nickname became "Mack Miles" because he wooed every lady and woman who met eyes with him. We said he was a cutie...and he certainly stood by that! He was hand fed until he couldn't hold his lil' head up any longer. He was then swept away by a group of giggling China women to a room off our eating area for a quick nap. He had babysitters at his beckon call. Da man!!!
The chef made his way to our table for introduction, as well as, the DJs and any other person who was 'somebody'. They all had to shake hands with the American blind bass player, spike-haired drummer and families. These guys were in Shanghai to change any attitudes related to our music...our culture. They were here to create magic.
Bar Hulu turned out to be one of several clubs owned by the man who invited us to China. We looked forward to being a part of the opening of his new venture...Brown Sugar Shanghai. If there was any comparison, our knocks were heard at heaven's door.

We're in China!!
When I tell you...the longest flight in history was made by four nearly sane adults and the cutest baby boy in life. WHEW!!!
Okay...I know...the 'longest flight in history' is a lil' over the top, but I have no other description at the moment. The ride was smooth, but our feet were fat! Yep...club feet were in da house! Dwayne was too cute when he woke up to find that he could hardly get his shoes on. Of course we had gotten up several times during the flight to stretch our legs, but we didn't realize the effect until it was time to get off. Oh boy! How would we manage this!
After the good byes and well wishes from the cuties, we enter yet another huge airport. We didn't have to walk too far before we were greeted by an entourage of men who looked happy to see us all. Introductions went around and God knows, the names were hard to grasp. We didn't give a damn...we were in China!
We are escorted through the airport to an area where everybody wore uniforms...police uniforms, mind you. Customs...that's what it was called. The lines were long and the uniformed people looked at us from head to toe and back again. Oh my, I thought, what are we in for? Back in the states, the security process soon became a headache after we realized that at each checkpoint, Sarah had to be cavity searched...for nothing!! That same 'happy' sistah in Austin had flagged Sarah's ticket so that she would be pulled to the side and damn near stripped before we could proceed. For the love of Jesus, let us be able to breeze through this last one, okay? ...and we did!! The uniforms even opened a private line for the blind man and baby boy in tow. Now...that's what we're talking about! Can we get some respect??
The men from the entourage were waiting patiently and the vans were at curbside. It was time for us to part ways. Brannen, Sarah and Miles were placed in one van; Dwayne and I in the other. We had our own personal guide and driver; so did they. The hour drive to our apartments was filled with chatter and laughter...and trying to understand what the hell they were REALLY saying!!
We get into the city and it's beautiful. Darkness had taken over the skies, but the lights from the city were bright. Skyscrapers were in full bloom. I had never seen anything like it! Dwayne just listens as I go on and on...I love him for that! The magazines did little justice to what the country girl was admiring. WOW!!
Finally, our apartment. The place where we'll be living for the next few months. The building was situated among several others...they almost looked alike! We'll soon find out that this was true. There are 20 million people living in this city...and they DON'T live on the streets! We're on the first floor...praise God. And it's cold. The elevator, the hallway...oh boy! #104, our room number...as they call it. Nice! Really nice! Dark hardwood floors, three bedrooms, living, dining, kitchen and bathroom...only one. We'll deal with it. Windows in every room...love it!
There's only a few minutes to drop our bags, look around and try the bathroom. Our guide, Valent, has a few must do's and don't do's to discuss before heading back out the door. Dwayne and I are praying silently that we learn to understand what this guy is really saying...the language is something to reckon with...especially their English!!

...on to China
Let me just say for the umpteenth time...I'm just a country girl tryin' to make it...lol.
What in the world did I expect to see in this HUGE airport for the next three hours? First things first...we need to eat! We come upon a food court that has sooo many choices and soooo many people. We finally decide on pizza. Not bad! Miles is not too happy and we figure he just needs to sleep more. No problem. So we head to the 'international flight' section of the airport and realize that the restaurants in that area are a lot more fancier. We're full already. No problem. Time flies while we're getting in a few cat naps. People are gathering so we know that it's time to board the big monster that's pulled up outside our window. Damn! It has two levels. Country girl is excited now. We board...this bird is HUGE. People everywhere! Seats everywhere! We find ours and get settled...right behind the wall that divides the rich from the...not so rich...okay?? No problem. On that wall sat the tv monitor where we would watch movies and updated info on our exact location. Really. In between movies, a picture of a map would appear with a plane showing it's route, how far we had flown, which countries and waterways we had flown over, how many more miles we had to fly, and how long it would take. I'm sure some of you have already experienced this adventure, but the country girl was impressed, okay? The 'cutie service' was often and there was so much more on the menu. We ate and drank more times than I could count. Alcohol yet? No. Maybe we'll try that venture on the way home. No problem. After fooling with the bells and whistles on the arm of my chair, I found radio stations as well. Number six was my choice...jazz...of course! Dwayne was well on his way to slumber land by now, so I was on my own. Brannen, Sarah and Miles were several seats over and Miles WAS NOT having it. He was making his statement loud and clear in 18-month-old yelling form...I DO NOT WANT TO BE ON THIS DAMN BIRD!!! No problem. This flight had a LONG way to go, so why shouldn't I go to slumber land too? Miles decided to surrender...and so did I.

De plane...de plane!!
Sooo...after leaving the happy-ass sistah back at the check-in counter, we proceed half-hastily to our gate. Remember, we've got 'Blind Boy D' [Dwayne penned a song by that name...lol] and baby Miles in tow. We're strolling and suddenly hear "Temple and Jackson parties, please report to your gate, the plane is waiting." I thought, WOW!! they're waiting on us! WOW!! The lady who greeted us was another not-so-happy camper and she did't hide it. We board, flight attendants were courteous, taking proper attention to Dwayne and Miles, as they should, and we're finally seated...ALL THE WAY IN THE BACK!!! okay???? LOL...LOL...LOL.
We're headed to San Francisco in the booth, in the back, in the corner, in the dark. We're so damn sleepy we don't even talk to each other. We just find a comfortable way to get in a few zzzz's without waking up with crooks in our necks! That didn't take long and we slept right thru the first round of beverages. Whoa! Hold on! De plane is doing some sorta up and down thing that WAS NOT IN THE MEMO...okay? It kept doing this thing for a minute...no...for a lotta minutes. Dwayne and I held hands and prayed aloud! What in the hell was really going on? No more sleeping for us. That's it!
We were able to get in on the second round of beverages which did not include any alcohol...or at least I didn't scope any out on the cart. We gulped our orange juice because no sooner than the one cutie offers you a drink, the next one is right behind her to pick the damn thing up! To hear the captain inform us that we were preparing for landing was music to our ears. Praise God! That up and down thing just comes with the territory, huh?
We are the last to deboard and prepare for the three hour wait in the SF airport. Safe and sound. Amen.

Well...well...well...
What can we say? Where shall we start? Oh boy! Guess the beginning is the best place, huh? LOL...We ask that you have patience. This is a 'catch-up' story of sorts. We'll bring it to ya via much pleasure and reality.
With today being Friday the 5th day of December and us arriving on Wednesday the 12th day of November, I'll have to resort to my memory, which works a lil' slower than it did, say, 10 years ago, right? Anywayz, here goes! Whew!
Leaving Austin on that Tuesday morning was C-R-A-Z-Y!!!! Our flight left at 6:25 a.m. and getting to the airport was an adventure. Made it there with a little time to spare...'little' being the operative word here. We are traveling with friends from Austin...Brannen, Sarah and Miles, their 18-month old. Brannen plays mean drums and will be directing the band that he and Dwayne will be a part of in Shanghai.
Imagine check-in. I've got a blind man on my arm with five pieces of luggage in tow and they have the cutest baby boy who is really sleepy since he was just picked up from the babysitter and being dashed off to the airport! They have five pieces of luggage as well. We get to the counter to be greeted by a sistah who pretended to be happy to see us. We are all looking saggy-eyed, yet glad to finally be at this point. I'm so lethargic, that our final bag that is waiting to be checked in has changed colors. I swear, while packing the damn thing at home five days earlier, it was black. For some reason, as it sat behind that counter at the airport, it had turned green! Yes friends...and I began to trip out thinking that someone had lifted our luggage!! Oh yes, you know how I am...absolutely determined...until that not so happy sistah looked at the tag and of course it read 'Lorenzo Dwayne Jackson' and all I could do was smile. We then discover that same black/green bag would cost us $130 to be thrown around and tossed on that jet! Guess what? That made the sistah happy...LOL...LOL...
